How to Maintain RC Cars

By Paul Rice

Just like a full-sized car, proper maintenance will lengthen the lifetime of your remote control car, protect your investment, and help your vehicle operate at peak performance.

Whenever you change out the batteries, and before you use it, make sure that you give it a once over. Make sure that the tires are in good shape, and look over the screws to make sure that they are all tightened. Are all the wires connected, and are the battery connections good? Consider whether or not you will have to adjust the shocks for the terrain. Also make sure that the weight is distributed just the way that you want it to be and that the tires that you have chosen are good for the kind of movement you are planning on. A general purpose tire can be good for racing surfaces, but if you want to go off road or onto the pavement, you'll need something heavier. Make sure that you re-glue the tires right away if they get loose.

It is important that the motor and slipper gear are properly aligned. Misalignment will cause unnecessary wear. Before you use your R/C car the first time, check alignment and make sure the mesh is not too tight or too loose. Set the gap between them to the width of a piece of paper, making sure you remove the piece of paper before putting the car back together. Periodically check to make sure the motor and slipper gear are tight; if they?re getting loose, re-align, use some low strength LocTite on the screws, and re-tighten.

Always make sure that you've put your car down on something that it can handle. A race car, for example, cannot be expected to do so well off-road, and a carpet car isn't made for jumps. If you crash your car too often, you are going to to see more damage. If you are going to jump, always do it at a steady speed, without acceleration and do it head on, not at an angle.

Never let your electrical components overheat. If you can smell burning electronics, this means that there is too much stress on the motor and that there is too much damage being done. Do not allow your RC car to get wet. Moisture will invite corrosion and damage the electrical parts. Before you recharge your batteries, make sure that they are completely discharged unless you have instructions otherwise.

Always make sure that you follow the manufacturer's recommendations when you are dealing with maintenance if you have a gas engine in your RC car. This typically means that you need to clean and oil the filter before storage and drain the fuel.

After you have run your car and before you put it away, use a damp cloth to remove and debris or dirt. Make sure that the batteries are taken out of the car and the controller. Make a note of any broken parts that you need to replace before you can use your car again, and make sure that you get the replacement parts that you are after, as using bad replacements can cause even more damage.

There will come a time when a car becomes too worn out and needs to be replaced. If you do your research, buy a good quality product, follow these common-sense rules, and maintain your R/C car, your vehicle will most likely last a long, long time. - 31505
